Frequently Asked Questions

Can you provide both End-of-Life Doula Services and Michigan Funeral Representation Services?

No. According to MCL 700.1104, a volunteer or employee who provided services during your final illness may not serve as a Funeral Representative.

I'd like to donate my body to science.  Can you provide information and resources during planning?

Yes! We would be honored to make accommodations that fulfill your requests as documented.

I'd like to have a funeral while I'm living.  Can Farewell Rites accommodate this request?

Certainly, many people are now open to the concept of holding a "living funeral" to celebrate life on their own terms. We can help organize the event, which includes choosing traditional or non-traditional venues such as places of worship, funeral homes, community centers, banquet halls, public parks, pubs, bowling alleys, museums, zoos, sporting complexes, or even cruise ships.

Can you come to my funeral? I'm worried nobody will attend.

Yes.  We can also hire mourners to attend the services.  This is a common practice in China and Egypt.

How is an End-of-Life Doula different from a Funeral Director?

Doulas are not licensed to operate a funeral home or provide embalming services.  Doulas do not compete with funeral staff or hospice workers.  Rather, they work in tandem when needed.  Doulas provide Advance Care Planning, Grief Support before, during, and after death, Vigil Presence, Funeral Planning, and Companionship.
